How to Ask Someone to Be a Padrino or Madrina for a Quinceañera

Say why you chose them, be specific about what you're asking for, give them the option to decline, and follow up with the details in writing. Choosing the right person to ask is the exciting part. Actually making the request can be nerve-wracking, especially when money is involved.

Here’s how to approach asking for padrinos, to avoid awkwardness later.

Quick Refresher

Padrino means godfather, and madrina means godmother. Traditionally, it was a married couple who had been there for the quinceañera since her baptism. Some families stick to this tradition, while others invite multiple sponsors.

If you haven’t figured out the roles yet, start with The Role of Padrinos in a Quinceañera. After that, come back here to learn how to ask.

Before You Ask Anyone

First, not everyone is excited to be asked. Some see a sponsorship request as a bill in a pretty envelope, which isn’t an unfair perspective. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask; it just means you need to ask thoughtfully.

Second, ask only the people you’d want at the party even if they decline. If a no would change how you feel about them, you’re not inviting a padrino, you’re seeking a donor.

When to Ask

Ask earlier than you think you need to.

  • 12 to 9 months out: padrinos de honor and anyone covering major expenses like the venue, dress, or food.
  • 6 to 4 months out: crown, doll, cake, shoes, invitations.
  • 3 months out: smaller items and anything you’ve already ordered.

People need time to say yes and budget for costs. Asking in March for something needed in April puts them in a tough spot, no matter how much they care about you.

1. Start with Why You Chose Them

Say the why before the what. It turns a request into an invitation.

"You've always been there for me and I look up to you so much."

"You're such a big part of my life. Having you standing there with me would mean everything."

"Our families have been close forever. It would be an honor."

Keep it to one or two sentences and say it sincerely.

2. Then Be Specific

This is where many families run into trouble. Vague requests can lead to resentment since the other person must figure out what they’re agreeing to.

Clearly outline three points: the item, the cost, and the deadline.

"Would you be my Madrina de Tiara? That means the crown. I found one for around $75, and I’d need it by June 10. Does that work for you?"

"We’d love for you to be our Padrinos de Honor. We’re not asking for any financial help, just for you to be there with us. If you’d like to sponsor something small later, we can discuss it."

"We’re asking a few people to take on different parts of the day. Would you enjoy being Padrino del Pastel? The cake we’re considering costs about $250, and if the timing isn’t right, there are no hard feelings."

Each example allows them a way out. This is intentional. If a padrino feels trapped into saying yes, they might be less enthusiastic later.

If you aren’t comfortable saying a number aloud, offer options instead.

"We still have the cake, the recuerdos, or the brindis available. Would any of those sound good?"

Then send the details in writing afterward.

3. Put It in Writing, Nicely...

This doesn’t need to be a contract. Just a short note within a day or two of their yes. This simple step helps prevent most misunderstandings with padrinos.

For example:

Gracias again, Tía Rosa. Writing it down so we both have it:

Role: Madrina de la Última Muñeca
Item: Last doll, blush pink to match the dress
Estimated cost: around $60
Needed by: August 1
Note: It's a surprise for Sofía, so please don’t say anything to her!

Let us know if anything changes. We can always adjust. Te queremos.

Whether it’s a text, email, or a small card, what matters is keeping a record beyond your memory.

This helps avoid confusion and protects everyone’s feelings.

4. Consider a Small Gift

Giving something when you ask has become a nice tradition in many families. It’s not mandatory, but it adds a thoughtful touch.

  • Pan dulce and coffee delivered with a handwritten note
  • A small box with a rosary, a candle, or a piece of jewelry
  • A framed photo of the two of you
  • A "¿Quieres ser mi madrina?" bag in your quince colors

You can include the sponsorship details inside.

5. Avoid These Mistakes

  • Putting someone’s name on a printed list before they’ve agreed to it.
  • Asking in front of a group. No one feels comfortable saying no with an audience.
  • Following up too late, which puts them in a rush to order something.
  • Changing the price after they’ve agreed. If the cake costs more than you quoted, that difference is your responsibility.

If They Say No

Let them off the hook graciously. "I completely understand, and I’m just glad you’ll be there." After that, avoid bringing it up again and don’t let it change how you treat them at the party.

Sometimes a no really means "not at this time." If someone declines the dress but seems disappointed, you can gently suggest something smaller. Offer once, but never ask again.

One Last Thing About Money

Discussing money with family can be awkward. Being clear about it is kind to both parties. If you’re nervous, invite them for coffee first. This conversation is often easier over something warm.

The people worth asking are usually the ones who would have offered anyway.

Preguntas Frecuentes

How do you ask someone to be a madrina?

The approach doesn’t change, just the title. Madrina de tiara, madrina del ramo, madrina del pastel—whatever role you’re offering.

Is it rude to ask a padrino for money?

Not if you specify a single item instead of an open-ended amount. The discomfort comes from being handed a cost that was never discussed.

Can you ask by text?

Sure, for close friends and younger cousins. But for grandparents, older relatives, and baptism godparents, it’s best to ask in person or by phone. That gesture carries its own weight.

What do you write on a padrino card?

Include the role on the front, a line about why you chose them inside, and the item, cost, and date on a small insert.

How far ahead should you ask?

Aim for nine to twelve months for expensive items and at least three months for everything else.
